A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
FOR UNDERGRADUATE AND TRANSFER STUDENTS:
• During the summer months prior to the start of the academic year, the Orientations department sends out newsletters each week which include “Did You Know” facts and information about sustainability at SU.

• Each year, before the start of Fall quarter, orientation advisors receive a training that includes a presentation by SU’s Associate Director of Sustainability. The OAs bring this information to the students they work with.

• Each year, during “Fall Welcome” week, several orientation activities are organized, some of which focus specifically on sustainability and environmental awareness. Some recent example are:
--“Trash Talk”: At some of the Orientations lunches, student volunteers are present to introduce new students at SU on “what goes where” (compost, recycling, landfill). This is an initiative by CEJS, SU Facilities (Recycling shop) and Orientations.
--SUstainability Fair: During the Fall Welcome week, an SUstainability fair is organized bringing the various sustainability-focused groups at SU together to table and provide information to new students at SU with regards to sustainability practices at SU and ways to get involved in sustainability opportunities.

• Move-In: Zero Waste student employees and interns work with residence hall students and are instrumental in organizing and facilitating move-in. They develop and create signage, communication and posters. They are on hand during the event to facilitate waste stream pathways. In doing so, they actively engage students and families in the recycling and zero waste practices and processes of Seattle University.

FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS:
• Orientation for Graduate students consists of an online orientation course in Canvas. Information about "sustainability" is included in the "Wellness" category of the course. This Canvas orientation invitation is sent to all new graduate students and is available for them to reference for the first 6 months of their enrollment. They are not quizzed on the contents and using the tool is optional for them.
