Sustainability Liaison Network - Workplace Liaisons

A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):
The Workplace Sustainability Liaison (years active: 2013-2020) program empowered SCU employees to implement the University's Strategic Plan by fostering Justice and Sustainability programs among University departments and offices. Liaisons engaged their peers in sustainable behaviors in order to develop a culture of sustainability among faculty and staff at SCU. Liaisons are recruited to represent diverse organizations across campus. Workplace Liaisons met for one hour each month during the academic year to discuss strategies to implement sustainability within their departments. Workplace Liaisons devoted one hour of paid work time to implement a Climate Action Plan project goal within their workplace.

Note: This program is being restructured in the 2022-23 academic year.

A brief description of the employee educators program’s target audience (1st program):
The target audience is all employees on campus. The aim is to have at least one Workplace Sustainability Liaison within each department, to actively promote and encourage sustainability throughout campus.

Sustainability Liaison Network - Faculty Liaisons

A brief description of the employee educators program (2nd program):
The Faculty Sustainability Liaison (years active: 2014-2020) program empowered SCU faculty members to implement the University's Strategic Plan by fostering Justice and Sustainability programs among University departments and organizations. Liaisons engaged their peers in sustainable behaviors in order to develop a culture of sustainability among faculty and staff at SCU. Faculty who are interested in living/working more sustainably met to discuss how to be change agents in their social and professional networks, including research and curriculum. Faculty Liaisons met for one hour each month during the academic year to discuss strategies to implement sustainability within their curriculum and research.

A brief description of the employee educators program’s target audience (2nd program):
Any and all faculty members are invited to join the Faculty Sustainability Liaisons. Similar to the Workplace Liaisons program, our Faculty Sustainability Liaisons strived to engage their peers - reaching as many faculty across campus as possible.

Additional Programs 

A brief description of all other employee peer-to-peer sustainability outreach and education programs:
Sustainability Guides (years active: 2020-2022) was a program that enabled individuals who desire to have campus sustainability knowledge become trained to serve as hotspots of information for students, faculty, and staff. Sustainability guides were required to share sustainability knowledge, earn at least one sustainability badge per quarter, attend at least one Center for Sustainability event per quarter, and read the campus sustainability newsletter.

We are in the process of rebuilding the Sustainability Liaison Network program. Prior to the pandemic closure, this program was thriving. We attempted to do a virtual version of the program during the pandemic but were not successful. We are currently recruiting faculty and staff to be “Departmental Liaisons” and future meeting dates are planned for Spring 2023.
