The Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences offers interdisciplinary programs of study leading to a bachelor of science in environmental science or environmental studies. These programs provide students with the intellectual foundation they will need in addressing crucial environmental challenges of the 21st century such as human population growth, urban sprawl, deforestation, global climate change, waste disposal, air and water pollution, loss of biodiversity, and the need for renewable energy.

The Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering Department at Santa Clara University strives to educate civil engineers who have the breadth and depth required to plan, design, and construct sustainable, resilient civil infrastructure necessary to support society's complex needs, such as urbanization and climate change. The Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering undergraduate curriculum focuses on the application of state-of-the-art skills, a sound understanding of engineering principles, the ability to communicate and artic­ulate ideas, and preparation for lifelong learning. At the completion of the undergraduate program, graduates are well-equipped to enter the practice or pursue advanced studies in any of the civil engineering disciplines.

Sustainability Minor

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration:
The sustainability minor helps students discover the connections and balance among a healthy environment, just societies, and a vibrant economy that meet all people's fundamental needs currently and in the future, especially those of the global poor. The sustainability minor is easily accessible to all Santa Clara University undergraduates as it incorporates existing classes from different schools. The sustainability minor allows students to integrate an understanding of sustainability into their course of study from different disciplinary perspectives and in interdisciplinary ways. The sustainability minor brings a new dimension to existing local, regional, and global SCU partnerships, providing our students with both sustainability-related learning opportunities and an opportunity to assist organizations to increase their commitment to sustainability.

Sustainable Food Systems Minor

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration (2nd program):
The Sustainable Food Systems minor provides students with the opportunity to explore the intersection of global food systems and sustainability. Courses address the cultural aspects of food, food policies, nutrition and public health, social justice, sustainability, and opportunities for creating new innovation and change within the food system.
