SIP (Sustainable Intracampus Project)

Number of students served by the program (1st program):
2,345

A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):

SIP representatives are selected through an application process, which consists of short answer questions. Applications are open to undergraduates either living on or off campus. Resident Directors were asked to nominate several students who would be good candidates for the program. These students were emailed and invited to apply.

A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

SIP reps enroll in a 2 unit pass/no pass course, with classes held on a bi-weekly basis throughout the academic year. The course reviews general concepts of sustainability and encourages the SIPpers to reflect how these concepts relate to their daily lives and decisions. SIPpers are introduced to communication tools (Community-Based Social Marketing and Cialdini's Principles of Influence), and are required to develop an outreach campaign focused on a specific aspect of sustainable living.

A brief description of the staff and/or other financial support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

The Sustainable Intracampus Project is a program supported by the Office of Sustainability. The Director of the Office of Sustainability leads the SIP course, and Residence Life financially supports SIP programming when relevant and timely to staff and resident needs. The Sustainability Intern for Residence Life serves as the coordinator to regularly communicate with and support the SIPpers.

A brief description of how the student educators are selected (2nd program):

Undergraduate students apply to be selected for an internship with the Office of Sustainability. Students are selected based on their professionalism, proof of leadership abilities, and passion to learn more about sustainability. Each Intern has a different focus area: Student Initiatives, Faculty & Staff Initiatives, Residence Life, Communications, and Recycling/Waste Diversion. The Student Initiatives Intern supports the integration of sustainability with the student body, by working with and developing educational resources for graduate and undergraduate student organizations, off-campus student residents, as well as Associated Student Government. Internship length varies based on the student. Many interns have continued with the program through graduation (1 year or more).

A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (2nd program):

Student Interns receive on-the-job training based on their area of focus. Manuals created by previous interns serve as a set of constantly-evolving tools for outreach programs.
Sustainability Interns are introduced to communication tools (Community-Based Social Marketing and Cialdini's Principles of Influence), and are required to develop and implement programs to develop a culture of sustainability among students, faculty, and staff.

A brief description of the staff and/or other financial support the institution provides to the program (2nd program):

Sustainability Interns are paid to work 10 hours/week by the Office of Sustainability. They are supervised by the Director of the Office of Sustainability.
