The Earth System Science (ESS) major, offered by the Department of Geology, is designed to broaden the perspectives of geoscience students by integrating an understanding of Earth’s biological and physical systems with interdisciplinary, solutions-oriented investigations of the human dimensions of sustainability. The Earth System Science degree will prepare students for career options including geohazard assessment, environmental geology, climate change and environmental remediation, water resource management, geoscience consulting, Earth Science teaching, and other career opportunities that center the societal-Earth connection.

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (3rd program):
The BS Climate Science program (formerly Meteorology, Climate Science concentration, BS), offered by the Department of Meteorology and Climate Science, is designed to prepare students for careers in emerging fields of climate change studies and mitigation, and related fields including energy and carbon management. Graduating students will be ready to begin careers in the private sector or in government, or in government agencies as a climatologist, sustainability consultant, renewable energy scientist, geoscientist, or will be ready to enter graduate programs in the atmospheric/climate sciences.

The minor in Sustainable Water Resources is offered by the Department of Environmental Studies. The minor requires a minimum of 21 units across courses in water resource management, water policy, and sustainable agriculture.

Minor, Sustainable Sustainbility

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration (2nd program):
The Sustainability Minor is an 18-unit minor designed to educate the student in the science behind climate change and sustainability. There are four required courses, covering basics in sustainability, the science behind climate change, sustainability management including circular economy, and a practicum which provides hands-on experience in this field. There are also two elective courses that can be chosen from a list of courses from the seven colleges.

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration (3rd program):
This program provides students with a focus on energy policy and its integration with green building. The Program prepares graduates for future careers as Energy Policy Specialists and green building consultants.
