Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
GreenTalk Speaker Series/ENGR 100W: Engineering Reports

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

All engineering students are required to take 100W as a graduation requirement. 100W is designed to focus on sustainability issues and how they relate to engineering. As a result, the College of Engineering has 100% of their students take a sustainability focused course before graduating.

In the last few years, 100W students have attended the GreenTalk Speaker Series that bring in practicing engineers, scientists, and technical experts to deliver up-to-date briefings on how engineers deal with environmental issues.

This course will help students become integrated thinkers who can see connections between engineering and the environment. We will explore questions such as: How is the practice of engineering grounded in and conditioned by our earth and environment? How do the products of engineering impact our earth and environment?

The aim of this course is to build strong communication skills, both in writing and in speaking. By combining technical writing and environmental impacts, students will be better prepared for their professional careers. Students will analyze the effects of environmental factors, both natural and induced, as they relate to products, systems, and processes—while integrating technical communication skills.

This course will provide students with regular writing assignments, practice in editing, and company-focused oral presentations. This course will focus on technical writing that is direct, convincing, and accurate. As a result, students will be able to write and speak not only more effectively, but also more easily and confidently.
