Has the institution assessed diversity and equity in terms of campus climate?:
Yes

A brief description of the campus climate assessment(s) :

A Campus Climate Survey was conducted in 2015 with the intent to assess sense of community and respect for diversity among all members of the campus. The survey was administered to students, faculty and staff. The survey administered to students assessed student perceptions of the campus climate, the degree of sensitivity on campus regarding racial/ethnic, gender, disability and other issues, the experiences of diversity issues within the classroom and larger learning environment, and awareness of procedures to report discriminatory behaviors. The anonymous survey also collected detailed demographic information. The survey for faculty/staff contained questions dealing with racial/ethnic relations, the apparent fairness of professors and staff, and opinions regarding SJSU's diversity policies.

In addition, a task force was formed in 2014 to assess racial diversity on campus. From this task force, the Commission on Diversity (http://www.sjsu.edu/diversity/commission/) was formed and charged to advise the President on creating an inclusive campus environment and community at San Jose State University which includes assessing the current campus climate at SJSU; aligning, integrating and improving our current institutional policies and educational practices; and addressing the following recommendations from the University Action Plan: Towards a More Welcoming Community related to the 2014 Special Task Force on Racial Discrimination (http://www.sjsu.edu/diversity/commission/charge/index.html).

A Chief Diversity Officer has been appointed in response to the task force and commission recommendations. She will begin work in July 2016.
