A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
The Office of Sustainability created this list of courses by starting with courses that qualify for SF State's graduation requirement "SF State Studies" which includes four interdisciplinary topics: American Ethnic and Racial Minorities (AERM), Environmental Sustainability (ES), Global Perspectives (GP), and Social Justice (SJ). We supplemented this list by manually searching course descriptions in the SF State course catalog.
We designated each of these courses as either "sustainability courses" or "courses that include sustainability." This designation was made using the AASHE STARS definitions, UN Sustainable Development Goals, Earth Charter Principles, and relevant keyword searches. Courses that qualified as "sustainability-inclusive" included social, environmental, and/or economic aspects of sustainability. Courses that qualified as "sustainability-focused" directly listed sustainability as part of their curriculum.
The list of courses was then reviewed for accuracy and approved by faculty and department chairs.
