A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities:
The Emerging Leaders offers leadership training to SF State Staff and faculty who have been nominated by their managers for participation. The course includes general leadership and management theory and culminates in team projects that address work on improving campus. Instructors and project advisers are SF State's own staff from various areas of expertise. The projects are aligned with SF State's Strategic Plan, which includes sustainability. Emerging Leaders projects have included a water efficiency campaign in the residence halls, expanding compost collection to additional buildings, solar power for campus safety infrastructure, a campus wide vanpooling program, transitions to paperless processes, and creating a plan to donate excess food to food-insecure students. Staff participants gain expertise in taking their sustainability projects from the idea phase to learning how to implement them in a complex organization. They learn methods for justifying sustainability projects through return on investment calculations, alignment with strategic goals, and educational impact.

Employee educators are selected by the Emerging Leaders board. They select educators based on subject area expertise.
