A brief description of the program(s), including positive outcomes during the previous three years (e.g. descriptions of new courses or course content resulting from the program):
SF State has been the recipient of 6 "Campus as a Living Laboratory" grants from the California State University's Chancellor's Office over the past three years. The courses titles are: SUSTAIN: Students Using Spatial Technology And Integrating Nature, Analyzing the Embedded GHG Emissions Associated with Transportation of Goods and Services for SFSU, Bicycle Geographies, Development of an Introduction to Environmental Science Course Incorporating the Campus as a Living Lab, Incorporating water efficiency projects into a campus sustainability course, and Environmental Ethics.
The courses have resulted in a collaboration between the Physical Planning and Development department and various academic departments. The students in the classes have gained exposure to sustainability issues related to the operation of the physical campus.
A brief description of the incentives that faculty members who participate in the program(s) receive:
The Campus as a Living Laboratory Grant Program provides funds for the redesign of a course that ties elements of sustainability into opportunities for learning using the campus physical plant. Funds of up to $12,000 will be awarded to support the preparation of the proposed course. The funds cover faculty release time to conduct the course design.
