SDSU's sustainability major is an interdisciplinary program that involves coursework taught by faculty across campus. The central focus of the degree is the interface of human and natural systems. The curriculum emphasizes the study of cultural, historic, social, economic, and political values and forces that shape resource use and constrain responses to sustainable development.

The underlying theme in the Environmental Sciences major is that of sustainability. The program includes courses offered mostly in departments of the College of Sciences, with some courses in departments in other colleges of the university. Environmental science has a strong geographic component; understanding how vegetation, soils, climate, water, and human activities interact within a spatial context is the basis of environmental science.

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (3rd program):

Sustainable tourism management prepares students to work in
tourism, recreation, cultural, natural resource, and sports settings. It
stresses the cultural and ecological tourism leadership needs of new
tourism professionals by emphasizing the linkages between the
economic, environmental, and social (including cultural and political)
spheres and involves an interdisciplinary approach. Students learn
about assessment, programming, and evaluation of planning and management
of sustainable tourism businesses. Graduates find
employment as managers and directors with transportation agencies,
destination management organizations, travel, and tour companies,
tourism attractions, leisure, recreation, and sports organizations, cultural
industries, adventure and ecotourism services, and lodging enterprises.
