Has the institution advocated for federal, state, and/or local public policies that support campus sustainability or that otherwise advance sustainability?:
Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, bills, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:

The Associated Students, the student governance organization of San Diego State, has taken public positions on campus, local, state, and national issues in support of policies that promote sustainability. In 2011 the A.S. passed a resolution in support of signing the American Colleges and Universities Presidents' Climate Commitment, which urged the University to join the consortia of 650+ institutions in setting goals and taking actions to reduce carbon emissions. The A.S. Green Love board, the student initiative on sustainability, has a strong record of advocacy on local and regional public policies. Examples of Green Love's efforts include a 2010 collaboration with the San Diego Coast Keeper to advocated on behalf of Marine Protect Areas (MPA) in San Diego. Members of the Green Love board testified before the California Fish and Games Commissioner at meetings in support of the adoption of Marine Protected Areas status in South La Jolla area. Green Love has also supported local policies such as a city-wide ban on plastic shopping bags.
