As part of the District’s Strategic Plan, environmental stewardship is detailed in Strategic Goal 5:
Lead in Sustainable Policies and Practices. Objectives include:
Establish District and campus policies which promote and reinforce principles of
sustainability
• Expand leadership, advocacy, and stewardship efforts on campus, across the curricula, in
the classroom, and in the community
• Incorporate consideration of the environment, community welfare, and future impacts in all
infrastructure, operations, and maintenance plans
• Develop and incorporate sustainability content across the curricula

With growing awareness of climate change impacts to our daily and future lives, it is increasingly important for communities to build climate resilience to 1) absorb stresses and maintain function in the face of external stresses imposed by climate change, and 2) adapt, reorganize, and evolve into more desirable configurations that improve the sustainability of the system, leaving it better prepared for future climate change impacts.

In 2015, the City of San Diego formally launched its own Climate Action Plan (CAP) encompassing all
municipal operations and, using a community-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions baseline
calculation from 2010, setting a target to achieve a 15 percent reduction from this baseline by 2020.
The target for 2050 is to have GHG emissions at 80 percent below the 2010 baseline. To remain on
the trajectory for the 2050 goal, the City has set a target for 2035 to be at 51 percent below the
baseline. To achieve these goals, the City has established a set of five strategies:
• Energy and water efficient buildings
• Clean and renewable energy
• Bicycling, walking, transit and land use
• Zero waste (gas and waste management)
• Climate resiliency

It has been essential for staff to understand and be part of
utility conservation efforts, SDCCD has ‘smart meters’ installed at all campuses. Smart meters
measure and record electricity usage. Energy consumption data are captured and reported; the
data are utilized to focus maintenance efforts for building performance. The data are also used to
modify behavior of building occupants to help conserve energy and save costs.
