Campus Race to Zero Waste - Food Waste Competition
A brief description of the campaign:
SU participated in the Campus Race to Zero Waste - Food Waste Competition during the Fall 22 and Spring 23 semesters. We spread awareness of food waste throughout campus and challenged the campus community to decrease their amount of food waste. We held public food waste weigh-ins at the campus dining hall on select Wednesdays throughout the semester. As the semester progressed, we recorded a decrease in the amount of food waste generated in the dining hall.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
We recorded the number of people who entered the dining hall between 10:45am-1:15pm each day. We also had recycling staff at the dirty dishes return area. Recycling staff collected all plates and bowls. They scraped all food waste into a trashcan that was located on an electronic scale. Students could watch the food waste data in real time as they entered or departed the dining hall. Every 15 minutes the recycling staff would write the real time weight on a dry erase board at the entrance of the dining hall. They also posted videos on Instagram throughout each weigh-in. Instagram followers increased throughout the semester and food waste decreased by 23% from October 2022 to March 2023.

Recycle Madness
A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):
The Horticulture Program hosts Recycle Madness each spring semester. During the event, student organizations compete for prizes — and bragging rights — to see which can collect the most recyclable materials. The student organizations and individual students who recycle the most material (by weight) win prizes.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Recycle Madness encourages the entire student body to get involved with recycling initiatives. The campus averages 2-4 tons of recyclable materials each spring semester that otherwise may end up being discarded as trash when students move out over the summer months.
