2019-2020 MOVE offered 16 service based programs to students. Starting March 2020, we continued to offer nearly 10 programs remotely and virtually in order to meet COVID restriction state guidelines.
The number of students involved in community service has decreased significantly since COVID, due to restrictions established by the state and the institution. In addition, with a staff reduction, we no longer have a mechanism for tracking course-related service experiences. Service has always been (and continues to be) an integral part of the Saint Michael's mission. This translates not only into our impressive MOVE (Mobilization of Volunteer Efforts) program (established in 1988), but also into a robust curricular-based service philosophy. Nearly all of our First Year Seminars (prior to COVID) had a community service component, and many upper division courses also incorporated service elements into their curricula. We expect a return to this high level of institutional emphasis on service in the near future.
