Annual Spring Electricity Competition (students)

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:

Each spring, the Office of Sustainability runs the annual Electricity
Competition among all students living in apartment style units.
The competition is a 3-week long event in which students in each living area are challenged too see which unit will have the lowest total per capita kWh consumption. Students receive excel spreadsheets that gives them their baseline kWh consumption (data prior to the competition) and then gives them their weekly kWh consumption during the competition. Students are also given information on what their monthly electrical bill would be based on their usage (and how much they would save week to week based on their kWh reduction).


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

Measured savings from the 3-week competition have ranged from 25,000 kWh to 40,000 kWh (savings are calculated based on the baseline consumption measured from each student's apartment and how much they reduced their kWh consumption each week during the competition).

Budderfly Energy Awareness (employees)

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged (2nd campaign):

The Office of Sustainability worked with Budderfly to implement an energy awareness campaign among staff members in St. Joseph's Hall. Smart powerstrips and light switches were installed throughout every office in the building (as well as in common areas, hallways, bathrooms). Each occupant then received weekly email updates on their electrical consumption (thus enabling them to realize how much energy they were using, how it compared to their fellow co-workers and, how much they reduced their consumption by employing different user behaviors). The idea of the campaign was that when employees are giving data on their consumption, they are more likely to change their behaviors for the better (especially when friendly competition is thrown in with your office-neighbor).


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

The system's software is able to create reports to analyze the building's lighting usage and workstation usage by the occupants. It was discovered that overall, the staff in the building are pretty good with shutting lights off when rooms aren't occupied. The biggest improvements came with staff members being more conscientious about turning off laptops/monitors when leaving their office during the day and at the end of the day. This change in behavior proved to reduced workstation electricity usage by 27%.
