The long term goal is to demonstrate the university's leadership in sustainability / carbon footprint reduction for the students and community.

A brief summary of the climate plan’s short-term goals:
Convert to a cleaner burning fuel. In October 2008, Saint Mary’s University completed the project to convert the university’s three main heating plants to burn natural gas. As a result, the community and the university benefits from cleaner air through the burning of a cleaner fuel. The conversion to natural gas (in particular at the main plant) from Bunker A greatly improved the air quality in the south end of Halifax. It also allowed the university’s sustainability program to meet one of its goals.
