A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
Saint Mary's has developed a please no garbage can policy. This plea to the community is to request they take the garbage cans out of individual offices allowing for waste to only be thrown in separation bins. By removing the garbage can from the office people are forced to make the choice of where to throw their waste. This increases separation of recyclables, paper, organic and garbage. To date 9 departments have participated in the program. Also there are no waste bins in the classrooms. 4 stream waste separation bins have been conveniently located around the entire campus. A 25% reduction in waste to landfill was experienced and maintained for a 3 year period.
