This program helps students understand the consequences of continuing anthropogenic changes in then environment. Courses offer a layered perspective on ecosystems, the interaction between physical and living systems, and the effects of human society on the world around us.

Economics with Concentration in Sustainability Studies

A brief description of the undergraduate minor, concentration or certificate (1st program):

Concentration in Sustainability Studies within the B.A. Major in Economics:
The Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in sustainability studies is aimed at students interested in the environmental and social impacts of growing economies. It provides the thinking skills to help define how to balance economic growth, a healthy environment and a fair distribution of income and privilege. Premised on the concept that these ideas are connected, but often in conflict, requires people from different backgrounds to resolve the associated tension and develop balanced solutions. As an interdisciplinary degree, the coursework integrates recognized approaches to economics with related approaches to sciences and the humanities.

Learning Goals
1. Develop the ability to explain core economic terms, concepts and theories.
2. Demonstrate the ability to employ the “economic way of thinking”.
3. Apply economic theories and concepts to contemporary (e.g., income inequality) and historical issues, as well as formulation and analysis of policy
4. Ability to compare and contrast competing views within economics with a critical thinking perspective, an open mind, and a respect for diversity.
5. Ability to integrate relevant concepts from economics, science and the humanities to address sustainability issues.

Students in Environmental Science will learn to understand the natural systems around us, acquire the skills needed to solve serious environmental problems, and engage in the search for rational, sustainable forms of ecosystem management.

Environmental Studies

The School of Science offers several courses that cover various aspects of earth science and a number of interdisciplinary course dealing with issues critical to the earth's environment and human society. These courses are valuable to those with environmental or earth science topics that will increase their basic understanding of the earth and its environment, for those whose careers would benefit from such understandings. Environmental and earth science used to be called natural science.
