A brief description of the institution’s professional development opportunities on sustainability in the curriculum:

In 2021, Saint Joseph's College committed to institution-wide transformation and asked faculty to consider all courses through the lens of "sustainable communities." The new major Leadership for Sustainable Communities has been launched and Academic Affairs has committed to regular professional development to support faculty in the transformation. Additionally, through the Engagement and Academic arms of the Center for Sustainable Communities, curricular-specific intercampus education and support (sustainability-focused) is provided to all higher education institutions in Maine. The Center's ability to do this work is supported both by the college and Maine Campus Compact and funded through the Davis Education Foundation. In February 2022, the campus hosted Maine Campuses Won't Wait to kick off statewide campus collaboration in support of Maine's climate action plan Maine Campuses Won't Wait. Currently the Center for Sustainable Communities is assisting all Maine campuses in their asset mapping of sustainability programs and resources. Data gathered will serve as a roadmap for collectively moving forward to address the climate crisis. The Center provides ongoing technical assistance and support for participating campuses and access to resources, ideas, expertise, and best practices.
