SJU is a signatory of ACUPCC and has calculated its carbon emissions for each year since singing the agreement. Reducing emissions is also the primary goal set in SJU's Climate Action Plan.

A brief description of the plan(s) to advance sustainability in Buildings:
SJU's original climate action plan stated a goal for all new buildings built on campus to meet at least LEED silver standards. This has since been revised to just require that green building principles be taken into consideration and ultimately incorporated into new buildings and renovations. The change was made to reduce the increased hassle of formal certification. Sustainability is still a key part of building.

As a Benedictine institution, we take seriously our commitment to stewardship and to incorporating the goals of sustainability into every facet of campus life. As a university, we have the duty to prepare students to be responsible citizens, prepared to meet the social, ethical, local and global challenges of today.
