“The Royal Roads University research model centers the production of useful knowledge and tools under the unifying theme of sustainability to reflect the four core pillars of the University - environmental sustainability, empowering leadership, entrepreneurial management and conflict analysis and management”.
Within a knowledge-based economy, our research model is action-oriented and problem-solving in nature, reflecting the evolving learner community that Royal Roads University has fostered.
The 2006 university strategic plan positions the university in terms of sustainable development:
"…we will be a leader in sustainable development. This will be achieved through environmental education, research, and a demonstration campus – also a national historic site and future home of the Robert Bateman Centre for Art and Environmental Education – that preserves, protects and showcases Canada's natural and cultural heritage.".

Royal Roads University has developed and adopted a research model which encompasses sustainability as a key feature of any research undertaken on behalf of the university. This research model was created through multiple focus groups and meetings of faculty members from multiple departments who conduct research and was approved by the Royal Roads University Board of Governors in May 2002.
