Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee

 

Rowan University’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) animal welfare program is dedicated to the ethical and humane use of animals in research, teaching, and testing and to ensure all applicable laws and regulations are followed. Animal research at Rowan University includes the coordination and support of various departments and offices throughout the organization, and animal researchers at Rowan are trained and made aware of the legal and ethical implications of using animals in research, teaching, or testing. Rowan University animal researchers make every attempt to reduce pain and distress as much as possible and treat their animals humanely.

 

Rowan’s Animal Welfare Program consists of two major divisions.  Together, they oversee responsible use of animals in biomedical research. The program is dedicated to the ethical treatment and humane use of animals in research, teaching and testing. 

 

IACUC

 

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and standards.  Monitors research animal use and activities of live vertebrate animals used in research, education and testing.  Conducting protocol reviews and approval.

 

Rowan Vivarium Resources (RVR)

 

Provides animal husbandry, veterinary care, procurement, training, and other essential support to researchers in animal housing facilities at RowanSOM Vivarium and CMSRU Vivarium. 

 

 Animal-related biomedical research activities are an integral part of Rowan’s teaching, research and outreach missions.  Rowan has always embraced humane use of animals in biomedical research by providing assurance to Office of the Laboratory Animals at the NIH, by complying with Animal Welfare Act and Animal Welfare Regulations, PHS Policy and the Guide for the care and use of laboratory animals (8th edition) to improve the lives of humans and animals, and for the good of the society. 

 

 Rowan Animal Welfare Program is fully accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation for Laboratory Animal Care, International.   

 

 The IACUC is responsible for:



  • Ensuring compliance with standards and regulatory requirements; monitoring all activities involving live vertebrate animals;

 

  • Conducting protocol reviews (reviewing, approving, requiring modifications in, or withholding approval of initial, renewed, or revised, applications to use animals in research and teaching) (IACUC approval process);

 

  • Conducting semiannual facility inspections including animal study areas;

 

  • Documenting animal use and inspection conditions and filing appropriate reports to Rowan,  other institutions in the consortium and governmental officials;

 

  • Investigating any concerns and answering questions about animal use;

 

  • Suspending activities not conducted in compliance with federal or university regulations, requirements, and/or guidelines.

 

  • Committee Members: The IACUC includes scientists, veterinarians, and local community representation. All members are appointed by the Institutional Official, whose authority is designated by the President of Rowan University. Click here to find out the roles and responsibilities of IACUC committee members.

 

  • IACUC staff: Administrators knowledgeable in the laws and standards who facilitate IACUC applications to use animals and provide other support to the IACUC Committee.
