Student groups

REAL (Rowan Environmental Action League) is a Student Government Association funded student organization that advocates for sustainability on campus. They center around three pillars of nature, education, and action. They expose the Rowan community to local South Jersey ecosystems to help form bonds with the environmen. The education pillar is split into two main actions: the Rowan Community Garden and speakers at general meetings who talk about how their specific research area/career aligns incorporates sustainability. In terms of action, REAL members act as additional eyes, ears, and hands for different organizations on campus. If the Grounds team is looking to switch a plot of land to be organically maintained, REAL provides volunteers to manually pull weeds.

Inclusive Community Gardens

This project aims to follow inclusive design principles to build and/or renovate seven community gardens in southern New Jersey and make the gardens welcoming to people with disabilities, including developmental and intellectual disabilities. Garden design teams for each of the seven participating gardens across Atlantic, Camden, and Gloucester counties are creating gardens that are more welcoming of people with disabilities. Features of these gardens include raised and “table-top” beds for those who use walkers and wheelchairs, adding braille and pictures to the text on signs, and creating peaceful spaces without excessive sensory stimuli (such as windchimes and spinning objects).

Experiential learning at Saxbys. A revolution in education, fueled by a rave-worthy menu. 
The Saxbys at Rowan University's College of Business is an Experiential Learning Platform (ELP) cafe helmed by a Student Cafe Executive Officer (SCEO) that oversees a team of peers and all cafe operations while earning an undergraduate degree. Everything at this cafe is crafted for students, by students!
 
Saxbys is a certified B Corporation founded by Nick Bayer in 2005. In 2015, Saxbys launched the ELP to introduce exclusively student-run cafes to university campuses, complementing classroom learning with tangible, real-life experiences. The ELP is founded on the belief that young people should be empowered and prepared to mold the business movement of the future. 
 
Opened in January 2022 at Rowan University, the cafe is located on the first floor of Business Hall and was the first Saxbys ELP Cafe in New Jersey. Run entirely by over 35 students, the cafe provides in-depth entrepreneurial opportunities that supplement classroom learning. “Team development and managing people is a big part of my job," said inaugural SCEO Melody Wozunk (Management '22). "The Experiential Learning Platform prepares students really well. The whole point of the ELP is to develop leaders…to develop managerial skills in students.”

SDGs Lab

Take part in a program that over 10,000 students have joined to launch youth awareness and action towards building a more sustainable future. Through a speaker series, seminar, and interactive workshop, participants will have the opportunity to reflect and build on their understanding of sustainable development. SDGs LAB empowers youth to become sustainability leaders through virtual educational sessions that will connect, educate, and empower participants to become catalysts for change in their communities.

Rising Tide is a performance experience like no other. Written and performed by physicist and educator Dr. Robert Davies alongside the Fry Street Quartet, the story unfolds in a series of vignettes exploring the natural world from which we have emerged and the human world that has emerged from us. This feature-length cinematic performance fuses compelling science, evocative imagery, and powerful music in an exploration of nature, humanity, and the path that lies before us. Rising Tide features a commission from American composer Laura Kaminsky, segments of Haydn and Janáček, and large screen projections of original works by painter Rebecca Allan and internationally recognized environmental photographer Garth Lenz (among others).

This training will be provided by the Foundation for Environmental Stewardship (FES) is a youth-led, youth-serving sustainable development organization. FES is a not-for-profit corporation whose registered charity number is 801430307 RR0001. FES is an accredited organization by the United Nations and has a special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations. As the final generation that can solve climate change, FES empowers youth to create a more inclusive, fair, prosperous, and sustainable future.


Student employment opportunities

  1. Rowan University remains affiliated with the New Jersey Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability (http://www.njheps.org) as well as the PSE&G Institute for Sustainability Studies “Green Teams” internship program. This is a paid, 10-week, residential internship program hosted by Montclair State University and other universities around the state. 
  2. The Geospatial Research Lab at Rowan University provides opportunities for interns interested in joining the NJ MAP team. NJ MAP is a dynamic web-mapping site that hosts a suite of publicly available geospatial tools focused on New Jersey. Each NJ MAP project addresses specific environmental, land use and sustainability issues. Intended users include Sustainable Jersey Green Teams, municipal planning boards, environmental commissions, land trusts, watershed organizations and concerned citizens among others.
    Position: The project seeks one to two student interns to assist with aerial photo interpretation and data collection related to Farmland Preservation in New Jersey.
  3. Rowan University's Green Jobs Academy sponsors a new Rowan University EHS Internship, available for students in Environmental Science or related majors. The intern joins the Rowan Environmental, Health and Safety Department and assists with tasks and projects that promote health, safety, environmental protection, and regulatory compliance on campus.
  4. Rowan University's Green Jobs Academy sponsors students studying Engineering or related majors to serve as student workers during clean energy educational events held at Rowan University for high school STEM students. The student workers support hands on activities such as wind and solar workshops, to expand awareness and interest. The events include the new Alternative Energy Symposium and Rowan University Wind Lab Field trips.
