RWU’s commitment to community service is reflected in our Feinstein Service-Learning graduation requirement, which requires all full-time undergraduate students to participate in a meaningful community-engaged learning experience prior to graduation. For the past 20 years, the requirement has been satisfied through participation in the Community Connections program: a day of service for first-year students held during fall semester First-Year Orientation. In 2021, RWU restructured the Feinstein Service-Learning graduation requirement to make it more academically intensive and rigorous. The new graduation requirement is fulfilled by completing at least one of four types of community engagement activities:
* A community-engaged course involving a partnership with an external community-based organization or government agency (typically 3-credits)
* A public service internship (typically a minimum of 135 hours)
* An engaged research project overseen by a faculty member and involving an external partner
* An intensive volunteer experience with a community organization (50-60+ hours)
