A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation:
This information was collected from the 2010-2011 fall new student orientation and was presented to 100% of the 230 incoming students: -Sustainable Presentation presented by current RMCAD students whereby new students were briefed on current efforts that the campus is making regarding environmentally responsibility as well as: -created a fact sheet for new students regarding how to live college life sustainably -provided local resources for organic food and recycling -provided research resources -introduction to RMCAD Recycling Program -Eco Rep program -SEED (Students Expanding Environmental Development) -introduction to RMCAD’s Sustainability Coordinator -introduction to AASHE and the STARS program -Food Service provided by Serendipity Catering. This is a local environmentally conscious food service company who provides and encourages the use of biodegradable products made from renewable resources such as sugarcane plates and bowls, and cutlery made from corn and/or potato starch, napkins made from 100% recycled content. Also no plastic water bottles where used during student orientation. Serendipity took the food and biodegradable dinnerware waste with them to compost. -Paper printing was virtually eliminated through providing students with a flash drive loaded with the following items: RMCAD Catalog 2010-2011 94 pages x 230 = 21,620 RMCAD Student Handbook 2010 – 2011 33 pages x 230 = 7,590 RMCAD Student Technology Policies 2010-2011 5 pages x 230 = 1,150 Total pages saved: 30,360 These efforts diverted 75% of the typical new student orientation waste from the landfill.
