A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
The university's annual Goodbye, Goodbuy! move in sale is an official part of orientation and is promoted to incoming students as well as their parents. Goodbye, Goodbuy! is a program that captures the usable items that students discard during move out, diverting items from entering area landfills, and reselling them to incoming students. This sale was put on hold for the 2020 orientation due to the pandemic, so we engaged students in other ways (see below). In addition to parents and families, this program is of particular interest to graduate students who live off-campus in unfurnished spaces.
Sustainability information is included in the New Student Survival Guide, which is available to incoming first year students and transfer students.
Incoming international students attend a special session that includes a talk on sustainability at RIT with a focus on recycling and waste reduction.
During the August 2020 orientation RIT hosted a “wellness carnival”, where students had the opportunity to learn about sustainable practices from RIT Sustainability. Students participated in several DIY activities (such as DIY sugar scrub and sprouts in a jar) and learned about sustainable and healthy alternatives to commercially available personal care products.
