Richland College participates annually in RecycleMania, the national competition among colleges and universities to reduce waste generated and increase waste diverted from landfills. The college promotes participation among students and employees through the college’s website, posters, and student media.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign(s):
Richland did increase its recycling rate (the percentage of overall waste generated) during the 2010 competition period, averaging 56.92% compared to its average recycling rate of 53.5% prior to the competition. Richland also substantially increased the amount of recyclables per person during the competition period, collecting 2.9 tons per week per person. Following the competition, Richland collected 1.59 tons per person per week for the remainder of the academic year, an increase of 7.1% over the first six months of the academic year (1.47 tons per week per person).
