The President's Council on Diversity operated from 1992 until 2009. Currently, Rice is undergoing a transitioning to a new Council for Diversity and Inclusion. The council has been approved and is working on finalizing its organizational and operational structure.
The proposed objective for the new council is "to support and guide the Rice university community in fulfilling its mission by facilitating a campus environment that promotes diversity, inclusion, and academic achievement while learning from others and gaining understanding and experience."
(Other university committees include the Minority Affairs Council, the Gays & Lesbians Council, and the Center for Excellence and Equity in Education.)

The council will include representatives from Multicultural Affairs, EEO/Affirmative Action, Disability Support Services, Multicultural Community Relations in Public Affairs, and Diversity Outreach and Pipeline Programs. It will also work with liaisons appointed by each school, the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, the NSF ADVANCE program, the Office of the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, Human Resources, General Counsel, Rice Athletics, and the College Masters Committee. Additionally, the council will work with the Office of Institutional Research and the Office of Institutional Effectiveness to collect and analyze data related to campus climate and inclusiveness.

A brief description of the diversity office:
Rice's Office of Diversity and Inclusion is dedicated to preparing the next generation of leaders for increasingly complex societal and professional environments. It is responsible for the coordination of the new Council on Diversity & Inclusion, facilitating connections between similar groups on campus working toward achieving greater understanding and inclusiveness. Its primary focus is on students, but it encompasses faculty and staff as well.
