A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:
The Sustainability Specialist is responsible for broad sustainability coordination for the entire institution. The Sustainability Specialist, the Zero Waste Coordinator and the Director, Environmental Stewardship and Campus Renewal work together as an informal team to manage the institution-wide sustainability portfolio.
The Sustainability Team works closely with partners across the college on sustainability initiatives. Some examples include:
- The Sustainability Specialist is a member of the Print Optimization Working Group (POWG) which includes members from Ancillary Services, Financial Services and Information Technology Solutions. POWG has implemented several print reduction initiatives which led to an 18% reduction in staff paper consumption from 2018 to 2020 (pre-pandemic).
- The Sustainability Team works closely with the Commuting and Parking department and the Campus Store on implementing and managing a variety of sustainable transportation initiatives including bike locker and bike room rentals, bike air and repair stations, staff EcoPass purchases, and a ride-matching platform.
- The Sustainability Team works closely with many departments within Facility Management on from waste and recycling programs with Building Services, to supporting green grounds initiatives (Grow a Row, the Pollinator Garden, the on-site compost pile), to partnering on water bottle fill station installations, to providing support for an institution-wide energy audit.
- The Sustainability Specialist and the Zero Waste Coordinator work closely with Food Services to support and promote composting, reusable dishware, sustainable food and beverage offerings, and sustainable catering.
- The Sustainability Specialist and Zero Waste Coordinator work closely with Procurement on embedding sustainability into the tender process. On tenders that are weighted more heavily for sustainability (i.e. electronics, food services, cleaning products, etc.), a member of the Sustainability Team participates on the evaluation committee.
- The Zero Waste Coordinator works closely with departments across the college on initiatives to reduce and divert waste. They also work Materials Management and Space Planning on repurposing items that would otherwise be thrown out.
- The Director, Environmental Stewardship and Campus Renewal and the Capital Projects and Space Planning Teams work on green buildings and space optimization projects.
- The Sustainability Team hosts many events, workshops and activities throughout the year to engage staff and students in sustainability.
