The University's Mission Statement concludes with a classic definition of sustainability when it says, "We provide an educational environment and the tools to address the social, economic, and environmental issues confronting our region, nation, and the world".

A designated "Overarching Theme" of the Strategic Plan is "Campus Environment", where the focus is on continued improvement to increase efficiencies, reduce costs, and provide a more sustainable campus environment.

developed the following sustainability mission statement that was subsequently approved by the Board of Visitors in 2009.
