Purdue University Campus Planning, Architecture, and Sustainability Internship

A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):

The Sustainability Internship Program is a student worker program under Purdue University’s Campus Planning Architecture and Sustainability (CPAS) department carried out by the Sustainability Coordinator. The Purdue University Sustainability Interns gain hands on experience with sustainability initiatives relating to materials waste, energy, water, grounds, and buildings at Purdue. Interns are educated and trained by members of Purdue’s CPAS unit, and interns attend many different events at Purdue with the goal of educating students, staff, faculty, and visitors on sustainability practices taking place at Purdue as well as practices they can employ in their own lives.

The goal of the program is to offer a high-quality professional development experience to students through their work. Interns work through our office to perform a multitude of task from operationalizing sustainability through organizing events. For instance, interns help facilitate weekly campus farmer’s markets from May to October. During these events, interns answer student questions and engage participants in trivia and other educational activities. Interns also help plan, coordinate, and execute Green Week events in the fall semester and Earth Week events in the spring semester. Through event planning, communicating with stakeholders and faculty, designing and ordering merchandise and promotional materials, coordinating event details with student organizations, and volunteering at campus tabling and community events, interns are able to interact with the entire campus population and members of the local community. CPAS interns also volunteer at and help coordinate athletic events, most recently CPAS worked with Athletics to have an Earth Day softball game. Interns helped recruited and trained volunteers to educate fans on recycling and sustainability initiatives during game.

The program is open to students of any major. To join the program, students must apply through a competitive application process. Positions last throughout the academic year and in many situations can continue for multiple years.

Through outreach at events such as weekly farmers markets and tabling at campus areas with high foot traffic, we can reach all demographics of students directly through educational events or indirectly through projects and initiatives.
