Negative impacts to the surrounding area were not a significant issue as both renovations (Performing Arts Center, School of Government) occurred within the confines of their existing footprint. Demolition and heavy equipment occupied existing parking areas. Both renovations are associated with 100% native landscaping designs.
Do the green building guidelines or policies cover the following?:
Yes or No | |
Impacts on the surrounding site (e.g. guidelines to reuse previously developed land, protect environmentally sensitive areas, and otherwise minimize site impacts) | Yes |
Energy consumption (e.g. policies requiring a minimum level of energy efficiency for buildings and their systems) | Yes |
Building-level energy metering | Yes |
Use of environmentally preferable materials (e.g. guidelines to minimize the life cycle impacts associated with building materials) | No |
Indoor environmental quality (i.e. guidelines to protect the health and comfort of building occupants) | Yes |
Water consumption (e.g. requiring minimum standards of efficiency for indoor and outdoor water use) | Yes |
Building-level water metering | Yes |
A brief description of the green building guidelines or policies and/or a list or sample of buildings covered:
The two most recent major building renovations (Performing Arts Center, and the School of Government @ 57,512 ft2) relied on the 2015 IBC codes, which include the 2015 IECC (and related ICC) codes. Specific mandates to the architects/ engineers included that: the building envelope include an air barrier and rigid board insulation, insulated glazing, and window frames with thermal break; lighting was to be LED throughout with lighting controls/occupancy sensors; HVAC with building automation system; building-level electrical meters; and hot chilled water flow meters.
None
A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with green building design and construction guidelines and policies:
The specifications were tightly overseen by the Director of Facilities. Both were underbudget and ahead of schedule, and partnered with architect/engineers already experienced with our historic landmark campus and the value we place on our viewshed and surrounding forests.
