Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
In the fall of 2023, Princeton electrified its entire bus fleet, reducing annual tailpipe emissions by ~500 metric tons and improving air quality on campus and in the community. The transition from diesel-powered to emissions-free buses also eliminates harmful particulate matter from diesel exhaust in Princeton and the surrounding area.
Many universities have begun electrifying their bus fleets, but most decommission and replace one or a few diesel buses at a time. Princeton took the unique opportunity to electrify the entire fleet in a single effort. Launching the new eco-friendly buses, with improved routes and enhanced accessibility features, has increased Tiger Transit ridership.
Beyond campus, Princeton’s bus electrification can serve as a template for other universities and municipalities nationwide. The University is the first Ivy League institution to electrify its bus fleet and relies on one of the country's largest electric transit vehicle charging facilities. In 2023, Transportation and Parking Services hosted a Peer Learning Day, bringing more than 70 people from over 20 universities and transit organizations across the country.
