A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the municipal/local level:

On January 30, 2024, Princeton University announced a partnership with the Municipality of Princeton on various sustainability priorities, including public transportation expansion and sewer infrastructure repairs. This partnership involves a $9 million voluntary contribution from the University and thorough collaboration with the Town government. The partnership on public transportation centers on expanding and improving a shared shuttle bus system that serves the public. Sewer infrastructure repairs will help protect local communities, waterways, and wildlife from pollution.

In 2021, Princeton University filed a comment(Link is external) in support of the federal government’s latest proposal to preserve and strengthen the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy. Princeton's comment, in collaboration with Microsoft, follows their 2020 successful Supreme Court suit to preserve the DACA program, which provides legal protections for undocumented individuals who arrived in the United States as children.

Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the international level:

President Christopher Eisgruber is a member of the Presidents' Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, an alliance of American university leaders dedicated to increasing public understanding of how immigration policies and practices impact our students, campuses and communities. 

The Alliance works together to:

  1. Educate the public and policymakers about the value and contributions of international and immigrant students and scholars to our campuses, communities and nation.
  2. Improve how we support international and immigrant students on our campuses, including by sharing best practices with each other.
  3. Support the consideration and adoption of federal immigration policies and practices as well as relevant state policies that honor our values and commitments as educational institutions and press for re-examination of those that do not.

As a not-for-profit educational institution organized under section 501(c)3 of the IRS tax code, the university is precluded from taking political positions. However, members of the Princeton University faculty and staff actively contribute to public policy debates and to the development of sound environmental policies and the implementation of effective sustainability initiatives on the state and federal levels.
