Since 2013, Princeton's Office of Institutional Research has conducted a longitudinal survey of campus sustainability culture, by assessing sustainability beliefs and behaviors of all incoming first-year students and outgoing seniors. The survey is comprised of one broad question on sustainability beliefs, a question about involvement on campus, and 11 specific questions on sustainability behavior.

Please rate the frequency with which you did the following during the current school year (most of the time/very often/often/occasionally/rarely or never):

The survey conducted is of the entire first-year and senior classes.


A brief summary of results from the cultural assessment:

Over the past five years, the reported frequency of sustainability behaviors has shown little fluctuation among the different classes.  The Class of 2026 showed a slightly higher reported frequency of buying used clothing, and reported a slightly lowered frequency in most of other sustainable behaviors asked about when compared to previous classes. 

Regarding sustainability beliefs, the Class of 2026 said that sustainability is related to environmental, social, and economic factors at a slightly lower rate than prior classes.
