A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
The Office of Sustainability provides incoming undergraduate and graduate students with many opportunities to learn about sustainability on campus and get involved in various programs. These beginning of semester activities include:
- Activities Fair and Career Fair: Office of Sustainability, a range of Sustainability clubs and adjacent groups inform new students about job and volunteer opportunities and sustainability on campus,
- Green Brunch: Meet and greet for new students and all environmentally-concious student groups and departments.
- Outdoor Action: The sustainability principles have been integrated into the University’s Outdoor Action (OA) undergraduate orientation program. OA, one of the largest outdoor orientation programs in the United States by participant days, helps to build environmental consciousness among all participants.
- Farmer's Market: Weekly chance for students to get involved with the Office of Sustainability and learn about Princeton-Area sustainable and diverse vendors.
- FSI Meet and Greet: Office of Sustainability information session with Freshman Scholars, a summer program for incoming students.
- Community Action Sustainability Tour: Tour of notable sustainability sites and initiatives from Campus Energy Director for incoming students.
- Move Out/Resale: At the end of the spring semester, the Office of Sustainability collects donations of gently used furniture and other dorm items (mirrors, lamps, fans, etc.). These items are offered to incoming students at the beginning of the Fall semester at a 90%+ discount. Entering students are informed of this program during orientation, and participating students are added to the Office of Sustainability's newsletter list, where they receive additional information about participating in sustainability action on campus.
- Graduate Information Session: The Office of Sustainability also runs a table at the Graduate School Information Session for incoming students. Featured are materials focused on ways for graduate students to get involved in sustainability on campus and resources to live more sustainably in graduate housing.
