Do It in the Dark: Live Energy Application

In April 2014, the student group Students United for a Responsible Global Environment (SURGE) spearheaded the University’s first campus-wide residential college energy savings competition, Do It in the Dark. The competition employed a new mobile website, called Tiger Energy, which highlighted each residential college’s live energy data as well as full campus live energy use. The app, designed by local startup Wattvision owned by Savraj Singh ’03, was tailored specifically to Princeton’s campus and culture. The app will allow Princeton to continue running this residential college competition annually in its effort to help raise awareness about campus energy usage.
The first place winner of the competition was Forbes College, which saved nearly 7,000 kWh and $1,617.

The Do It in the Dark app was viewed about 2,300 times during April 2014, when the competition was held.
The long-term results of the competition have been analyzed by Dr. Sander van der Linden, a Princeton behavioral scientist, research associate and lecturer. The results were consistent with those of other energy competitions: in time, energy use returned to levels similar to those of the baseline. The results of his research will inform future competitions coordinated by Office of Sustainability, SURGE, and Wattvision as they attempt to adapt them in the future for maximum lasting impact.
