At Prescott College, the Sustainability Council seeks to foster sustainable practices in all aspects of the institution, including the following:

  • Facilitating assessment and improvement of the functions of the physical campus, both in terms of resource use and carbon emissions, as well as within its local ecological context;
  • Promoting a sense of community based on sustainable, equitable values and practices that address injustices;
  • Helping attract and retain students at our various campuses by encouraging physical and social spaces that are appealing, accessible, safe, and nurturing;
  • Encouraging integration of principles of social and environmental sustainability into the curriculum;
  • Establishing criteria and approving student proposals for funding from Student Sustainability Fees.

Generally, the Sustainability Council informs, organizes, and motivates efforts toward social, environmental, and economic sustainability across the Prescott College community. Specifically, this council is responsible for recommending sustainability goals and initiatives to senior leadership, monitoring and assessing related projects, and convening various stakeholder groups to gather input for these activities.

The Green Mountain Center for Sustainability is staffed by a full-time Sustainability Coordinator and two co-directors.

Description of each sustainability office:

The Green Mountain Center for Sustainability at Prescott College serves students, alumni, staff, local citizens, and an online audience by promoting learning and developing practical solutions for increasing community sustainability. The Center integrates Green Mountain College’s award-winning approach to sustainability education with Prescott College’s rich history of leadership in environmental studies and social justice. By building learning communities through events and programs, facilitating connections among stakeholders, and sharing resources, the center cultivates the skills and knowledge needed to create a more just and sustainable society. The Green Mountain Center includes two part-time co-directors of sustainability (faculty), a full-time Sustainability Coordinator (staff), and a team of 8-15 part-time, work-study students.

Narrative outlining the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:

The Green Mountain Center for Sustainability is the main institution-wide coordinator for sustainability at Prescott College, which integrates decisions about campus-wide sustainability through the Sustainability Council. There are stakeholders on the Council from across the college community, including students, faculty, and staff, who represent diverse academic programs, departments, degrees, modalities, and positions. A sample of our accomplishments within the last three years is listed below:

  • Created alliances with organizations such as Prescott Slow Food, Northern Arizona Climate Change Alliance, Prescott Farmers Market, Quad Cities Climate Collaborative, and other community activists while also fostering social sustainability through sustainability-themed events; examples include Earth Week, a Fall Harvest Festival, Seed Mania, Free Store Fridays, ongoing film/documentary screenings of sustainability topics, clothing swaps, participating in an EcoChallenge, and DIY workshops
  • Worked with community partners to support the commissioning of a climate impacts report for the local watershed through 2100 and helped develop and edit a Sustainability and Resiliency section of the Prescott General Plan for 2025
  • Developed a full-time staff position to serve as Sustainability Coordinator for Prescott College, which was voiced as the #1 priority for sustainability by students in 2020
