Name of the innovative outcome, program, or initiative:
Does the innovation represent a new, extraordinary, unique, ground-breaking, or uncommon outcome, program, or initiative that addresses a sustainability challenge and is not covered by an existing credit?:
Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of the innovation:
The degrowth movement is a unique perspective on a sustainable future that requires a downscaling in unnecessary production and consumption to lighten environmental pressures, improve human well-being, and restructure systems towards global justice. While the movement is popular in Europe, it is less known in the United States. Prescott College is one of a handful of schools that offers an academic space for learning about degrowth and a co-curricular space for degrowth practices.
The Degrowth Digest is an open Canvas course accessible to all Prescott College students. Students can learn about degrowth through a semester reading list and virtual, synchronous group discussions. While the course is not formally taken for credit, students can enroll in a Mentored/Independent Study, use the course as a learning guide, and conduct an independent project in addition to the course materials to earn credit.
Prescott College's degrowth group actively contributes to the Degrowth Institute's Toolkit page to provide course materials, book reviews and recommendations, and reading discussion prompts to expand the capacity of other degrowth groups.
