The Sustainability Crew (formerly the Garden & Compost Club) is a student-led group that broadly works to improve sustainability on campus and throughout the community. Their mission is to expand, educate, and support sustainability efforts for diverse stakeholders, focusing on youth and marginalized communities. They create and lead weekly events at the Sustainability Center for students to learn and experiment with sustainability-related activities.

Yes

Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of the student organizations that are advancing ecological integrity or racial equity and social justice:

Cooking Club upholds the values of the Slow Food movement -- good, clean, and fair food. This group meets once a week to cook meals together and learn basic, resourceful culinary skills while embracing the "slow" in the slow food movement. This chapter actively participates with the local Slow Food Prescott group, which centers on food justice in its activities and expanding educational resources about regenerative food practices and transforming food systems. Some of the most significant activities include planning Seed Mania in the spring to prepare community members to grow their food and hosting a Fall Harvest Festival to celebrate the harvest season in gratitude to the community.

2.2 Sustainability-focused co-curricular activities

The Sustainability Center hosts daily events that center on health and well-being:

  • Mindful Mondays - free guided yoga or meditation sessions, followed by quiet study hours
  • Taco Tuesdays - vegetarian tacos with garden produce, campfire in colder months
  • Mycology Wednesdays - cultivate mushrooms in the campus mycology lab or learn about the environmental and health benefits of different mushrooms
  • Craft Thursdays - make upcycled jewelry out of unused materials (e.g., old bike tires), or make natural dyes with local plant species to dye clothing
  • Free Store Friday - browse the newest donations to the campus free store with a free soup provided

Larger events scattered throughout the year include:

  • Earth Day Trivia
  • Fall Harvest Festival
  • Bioregional Scavenger Hunt
  • Climate Justice Teach-in

Lastly, PC hosts an annual Sustainability Education PhD Symposium.

RAs for Sustainability: In the residence halls, at least one RA is always trained in basic campus sustainability operations (e.g., composting). This RA serves as peer-to-peer support for students living on campus and hosts a mandatory RA event, which can include a formal tour of the campus composting system while addressing questions/myths about composting or other campus-life sustainability topics.

Yes

Description of and/or website URL for at least one sustainability-focused employment opportunity for students:

Students can get work-study funds and be employed at the Green Mountain Center for Sustainability, which is the largest on-campus employer of student workers. At the Center, between 8-16 students maintain the gardens and compost systems, plan and organize daily/weekly events, maintain the Free Store, assist Butte Creek restoration efforts, and work on individual projects. These students also participate in larger campus events like the semesterly waste audit.

In the November 2024 Student Sustainability Survey, 47% of students reported participating in an on-campus or online sustainability-focused event or series of events within the past year. The Sustainability Center also directly tracks participation in on-campus events.
