Resident Assistant Sustainability Orientation
A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):
The LEED Platinum Village residential dormitory houses ~100 students on campus each year, and it is managed by a handful of student resident assistants. The RAs give new students an orientation about student life in the dorms which includes topics pertaining to sustainability. For example, RAs hosted an event to demonstrate the campus composting systems and foodscrap collection system in the Village so that residents are aware of how to dispose of their kitchen waste. In addition, RAs invited the Sustainability Coordinator to host a Green Move-in event where items collected from previous dorm residents were handed out for free to new students moving in, establishing the importance of diverting materials from landfills. Other events that occur during the year include a "weatherization workshop" where students prepare to leave their dorms for vacation (e.g. winter break) by turning off all appliances, closing windows, and optimally setting thermostats to conserve energy.
