Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
IELP Sustainability Curriculum and Service Learning
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The Student Sustainability Center partnered with the Intensive English Language Program (IELP) and over the last two summers has helped to create connections between local sustainability initiative and global challenges through education.
Students who participate in the program learn about sustainable development in Portland as well as in their own home countries. Throughout their time in Portland, students visit and serve at local organizations while learning about the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), created with feedback from all 193 member nations and ratified through the UN General Assembly in 2015. As the students connect with local efforts and organizations, they use their experience to better describe and understand sustainability in Portland.
In December 2018 the IELP/SSC partnership received an award at the 11th annual Global RCE Conference in Cebu City, Philippines. The program was recognized for its work of engaging student in curriculum focused on volunteering and the SDGs.
