Data Visualization Studio

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

The Data Visualization Studio (formally name Decision Theater) at Portland State University’s Institute for Sustainable Solutions is a high-performance, collaborative workspace for researchers, instructors, and decision-makers to engage with information that advances sustainability challenges, investments, and policies.

The studio offers large-scale visualization of data and imagery, powerful computing, video conferencing capabilities, and a collaborative environment that enables teams to work in small groups on a single unit, then pair all units together to view larger data sets and images.

Specs:

Three side-by-side 80-inch touchscreen Monopads at the front of the room capable of displaying multiple smaller images or one giant image.
Four separate 70-inch touchscreen Monopads that serve as group work spaces around the room.
Movable tables and chairs offer different seating arrangements for groups up to 30 people.

Managed by the PSU Institute for Sustainable Solutions (ISS), the Data Visualization Studio was built in 2016 with funding from the U.S. Economic Development Administration as part of a project to track energy use in buildings on and around the PSU campus and improve building performance. The studio will also be used as an interactive classroom space for students to engage with complex sustainability issues through programs like the Graduate Certificate in Energy Policy and Management.

ISS is currently testing different applications for the space, working out technical details, and developing a sustainable business model that includes offering the studio as a multi-purpose meeting and workspace for local agencies, community organizations, and businesses. The expected launch date to the public is summer 2017.
