A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
Bike Hub and associated programs: The PSU Bike Hub is a full-service bicycle repair shop and learning facility designed specifically for the PSU Community. It is owned and operated by the university transportation department with the express mission of encouraging more PSU students and employees to commute by bike more often. The Bike Hub provides self-service repair stations with guided one-on-one instruction as well as full-service professional repair. The Bike Hub hosts weekly workshops on bike commuting, road-side maintenance, advanced repairs, all-season riding, and various topics by guest lecturers. Rental bikes are also available through the Bike Hub. The retail selection features carefully chosen parts and accessories that balance quality with affordability and meet the essential needs of the modern bike commuter (these include lights, locks, helmets, fenders, rain gear, racks, bags, and just about every repair part imaginable). PSU students, staff, and faculty can join as members to the Bike Hub and enjoy discounts and other member-only services. Formed out of the PSU Bike Co-op, which began in 2003, the Bike Hub opened in January of 2010 after an extensive planning process. Within the first year, membership has surpassed 1500 riders and continues to increase. The overall use of bicycles as transportation to and from our campus is also increasing. In 2003, just 4% of trips to PSU were by bike. By Fall of 2011, that number had increased to 12% of trips, with 16% of students reporting that they had ridden a bike at least one day during the survey week. VikeBikes Program: With the help of some visionary PSU students, PSU created the VikeBikes program (Vike being short for Vikings, our school mascot). This program helps break down one of the most costly barriers to bicycle commuting: buying a bike. By refurbishing bicycles that have been abandoned on campus, the program created a commute-ready fleet rental bikes that can be rented for up to 3 academic terms (Fall, Winter & Spring). The cost to check out a VikeBike is just $45 per term, and can be charged to a student account. The VikeBikes program is about MUCH MORE than just the bike! Members of the VikeBike program receive the following: Fully refurbished commuter bicycle with full-length fenders and a rack or basket Set of front & rear lights, already mounted to your VikeBike Quality bike helmet that is adjustable to fit all sizes U-lock with mounting bracket attached to the bike frame Quarterly membership to the PSU Bike Hub Quarterly bike parking permit for use of the secure PSU Bike Garages and Bike Rooms
