A brief description of the institution’s program(s) to encourage student research in sustainability:
The Solutions Generator is a program to inspire students as change agent leaders capable of envisioning, implementing, and assessing holistic sustainability solutions on campus and in the community. Students may apply for funding for sustainability research projects. It provides an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students from any discipline or major to form interdisciplinary teams and collaborate with faculty, staff, and community members to carry out projects. http://www.pdx.edu/sustainability/solutions-generator Sustainability Scholarships are offered through the Honors Program. These competitive awards of $5,000 for four sequential years offer incoming Honors freshmen interested in sustainability engaging, focused opportunities for them to undertake undergraduate research with a focus on urban sustainability. http://www.pdx.edu/honors/sustainability-scholars Support is also given at the graduate level through fellowship and assistantship opportunities for students to work with faculty conducting sustainability research. For 2012-2013 academic year, 22 graduate student fellowships and assistants were supported for sustainability research.

The Institute for Sustainable Solutions is helping advance three research focal areas at PSU - Urban Sustainability, Ecosystem Services, Social Determinants of Health - with the goal of making our region more equitable, resource efficient, and economically vibrant. The Institute provides support for faculty research in sustainability by offering convening services, research grant proposal development support, administrative support, and matching and direct research funding as well as funding for student research positions, services, supplies, memberships and travel.
