Narrative and/or website providing an overview of the institution’s sustainability-equity coordination:

In 2023, the Sustainability Leadership Council worked to revise and update the charter to formally recognize the central importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, justice and accessibility to our work. For many years the council had been structured around the college's climate action plan - the refresh of the charter is more closely in line with the climate justice and resilience work in the college's 2021 climate action plan. The charter reiterates the importance of engaging the diverse members of the PCC community in sustainability work including representation from the college's identity based equity centers.

Mission

The Sustainability Leadership Council (SLC) works in partnership across Portland Community College and within the community to steer and implement PCC’s Climate Action Plan and uphold the college’s commitment to sustainability. At PCC, Climate Action takes a holistic approach, using adaptation and mitigation to support racial equity and social justice to create a thriving campus community.

The SLC’s work involves creating culturally responsive and equity-focused programming including  student-centered curricular and co-curricular offerings. The SLC supports a just transition through green workforce development and models innovative pathways towards carbon neutral operations to build a resilient campus community.

Membership

The SLC aims to have membership from across the college including from our identity based-equity centers. Presently the Director of Multicultural Services for the Office of Student Belonging and Wellbeing as well as the coordinators for both our DREAMers Resource Center and a Multicultural Center Coordinator serve on the Sustainability Leadership Council. They participate in broad SLC programming, coordinate events in partnership with their areas and support the college’s broader approach to environmental and climate justice.
