A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities:
The Associated Students of Portland Community College designates student leadership positions that address and promote sustainability, focusing on outreach and operations, on the four campuses.
A brief description of how the student educators are selected:
Students are selected through a process which incorporates a written application, letters of reference, a formal interview and a group process interview. The written application and the formal interview include questions related to sustainability and the student's desire to engage in this topic as well as any experience coordinating or promoting events or related campaigns.
A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:
Students serving in this role are part of a student leadership program that trains and develops future leaders. The initial focus directly correlates with topics associated with leadership like personal development, team building, communication, creating mission, vision and goals as well as servant leadership. In addition, students are given more opportunities for personal development, enrichment and learning about sustainability issues. For example, students have attended conferences and workshops that help them build skills and knowledge about sustainable practices in food and food production, energy and building design and green jobs. Finally, students learn by serving on college committees that engage in topics related to sustainability. For example, students serve on the transportation committee, buildings and energy committee and the Green Initiative Fund committee. All of these committees provide students with some mentorship opportunities with staff and community partners.
A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or faculty/staff coordination):
Student Government handles remuneration for the student leaders' time and efforts. The Student Activity Fee supports the Green Initiative Fund (TGIF), which funds the projects these students engage with like Learning Gardens and the Bike Rental Programs. The students are supervised by the Student Life Directors and receive ongoing training and support through Student Government. They engage with staff members in the Student Leadership Program, faculty in a variety of disciplines, and receive additional support from the Sustainability Department.
