A brief description of the themed semester, year, or first-year experience:
All new students, as well as campus community leaders such as resident advisors, sponsors, and mentors, participate in a first-year book experience. After soliciting suggestions from community members, the Orientation Committee, headed by the Dean of Students, selects a book that is mailed to new students. During new student orientation, two faculty members discuss issues raised by the book, and new students participate in a discussion facilitated by campus community leaders. In 2009, the first-year book was "Covering: the Hidden Assault on our Civil Rights" by Kenji Yoshino, which focused on issues of social sustainability through Yoshino's reflections on identify politics from both personal and professional perspectives.
