A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:

It corresponds to the year before the Lassonde Buildings (LEED GOLD certified buildings) opened. The addition of these new buildings represented a major change to Polytechnique's campus.

Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per unit of EUI-adjusted floor area, performance year:
0.02 MtCO2e per square meter

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives:

During year 2016-2017, here are a few of the initiatives put in place :
- Installation of electronic controls for the ventilation and air conditioning of several premises
- Replacement of faulty steam traps.
- Removal of several auxiliary air conditioners, some of which were replaced by fan coils.

Polytechnique Montréal is in a continuous improvement process for initiatives and projects related to energy consumption which impacts GHG emissions. Every year measures are integrated.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

For this section, we are using the flexibility offered by AASHE for STARS reporting and are submitting the last assessment available of Scopes 1 and 2 before the COVID-19 pandemic; data are from 2016-2017 to refer to the same timeframe as OP-1. The 3 last years (2019-2020, 2020-2021, and 2021-2022 - for which the data are not yet available for this section) have been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the province of Quebec, we were subjected to confinement and various sanitary measures, limiting activities and access on campus. Furthermore, any assessment during this period can not be representative of regular activities since teaching, research and operations were affected throughout those years at different levels of intensity and duration, because of evolving and changing sanitary measures and going back and forth into and out of confinement.

Weighted campus users number for this credit differs from the one in PRE-5 since PRE-5 data are based on the latest data available which was 2020-2021 at the date of submission. Year 2020-2021 present an exception since all the students were registered in distance education because of the COVID-19 pandemic measures implemented by the government of Quebec. Before the pandemic, no student were enrolled in distance education.

Polytechnique’s supplier of electricity is Hydro-Quebec (http://www.hydroquebec.com/about/our-energy.html). The main source is hydropower which results in low Scope 2 GHG emissions.
